Just need vocals and an instrumental? Use the Vocal Remover

GO DEEPER INTO THE VOCALS

One separation. Three ways to use it.

MAIN MELODY

Lead vocal extractor

Isolate lead vocals to focus on the main melody, phrasing, and timing. Keep the lead vocal stem when you want to remove backing vocals from the vocal mix.

SUPPORTING VOICES

Backing vocal extractor

Extract backing vocals and hear the supporting parts that are hard to pick out in a full song. Use the background vocal track to study harmonies, doubles, and responses.

LISTEN & LEARN

Harmony practice

Separate harmonies from the main vocal and rehearse with the backing track on its own. Supporting vocal layers stay together in one file, ready to use in your audio editor.

How to separate lead vocals from backing vocals

1

Upload your song

Start with the original mix. Upload an MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, or OGG file and choose your output format.

2

Separate the vocal layers

Click once. We first isolate the vocals from the music, then split the main vocal from the backing vocals. Both steps run automatically.

3

Listen, compare, download

Play the original, lead vocals, and backing vocals. Compare a chorus where the layers overlap, then download individual tracks or a ZIP when downloads are unlocked.

Lead & backing vocal separation FAQ

How do I separate lead and backing vocals from a song?

Upload your original song and select Separate Lead & Backing Vocals. TuneStems first removes the instrumental, then separates the vocal mix into two files: lead vocals and backing vocals. You can preview both in your browser.

Can I remove backing vocals and keep the lead vocal?

Yes. Use the lead vocal output to isolate the main singing while reducing harmonies and background voices. This output is a vocal-only track; it does not include the original instrumental. Some vocal bleed or processing artifacts may remain.

Can I extract only the backing vocals or harmonies?

Yes. Use the backing vocal output as a background vocal extractor. It aims to retain supporting singing while reducing the lead voice. Multiple harmony parts stay together in one backing vocal stem; they are not separated by pitch or singer.

Can I remove lead vocals but keep backing vocals for karaoke?

The backing vocal output reduces the lead singer and retains supporting vocals. It does not include the instrumental. To make a karaoke mix with backing vocals, obtain the instrumental with our Vocal Remover and combine it with this backing vocal stem in an audio editor.

How is this different from a vocal remover or acapella extractor?

A vocal remover separates all singing from the instrumental. An acapella extractor returns that combined vocal track. This vocal splitter goes one step further, separating the lead melody from the supporting voices within the vocal mix.

Does this separate male and female voices or individual singers?

No. It separates vocal roles: lead and backing. Two people sharing the main melody may remain together. It is not a male/female voice separator or a tool for isolating each singer in a duet.

Does it work with Chinese songs and other languages?

We have checked the selected model with English and Chinese songs. Results depend on the arrangement and recording quality, so those examples do not guarantee the same result for every song or language. Listen to the previews to judge your track.

Why is my backing vocal track quiet or imperfect?

Some recordings contain little backing singing. Doubled lead vocals, heavy reverb, and voices singing the same notes can also be difficult to separate. Try a chorus with clearly audible harmonies and compare against the original. The tool cannot recover backing vocals that were never in the recording.

How many credits does lead and backing vocal separation use?

MP3 and M4A cost 36 credits per started minute, covering both processing steps. A 3-minute song costs 108 credits; a 3-minute, 1-second song costs 144. Other formats have different rates, shown before you start. Eligible visitors can try a preview without signing up; downloads follow the site's paid-access rules. Failed processing jobs automatically refund charged generation credits.

Which files can I download?

The two outputs are lead vocals and backing vocals. MP3, M4A, 16-bit WAV, 32-bit WAV, 16-bit FLAC, and 24-bit FLAC are supported, depending on your plan. Downloads are available individually or together as a ZIP after download access is unlocked.
